hanging out with these guys...
have been anticipating this trip for months. off to oahu soon for a family reunion this weekend, then spending extended time on kauai. hurricane flossie just passed... thank goodness there was no major damage to the big island.
i have spent more time on kauai than any other island, probably explains why it's my favorite. i'm always in awe during my visits -- the entire island is so peaceful and absolutely gorgeous.
my grandparents lived on kauai and we visited at least once or twice a year growing up. only since i've gotten older have i wished i spent more time with them when i was younger. but the memories are vivid, especially of my grandfather.
he'd take us for jeep rides on the beach in kekaha. back then i remember being driven for miles and never seeing any other cars on the road or people on the beach. simply paradise.
early morning we'd go fishing at barking sands and he'd pack a little cooler with bait and some snacks for himself. i forgot to eat the time i went with him. so all he could do was offer me seaweed and beer (budweiser i think) for breakfast as he smiled sweetly and laughed...
he'd make his own pork rinds and keep them in the oven. this way they always stayed a little warm whenever we wanted a snack. not the healthiest of snacks but mmm mmm good.
accompanying us to super-secret slip and slides (fenced off long ago) were always good times.
and along the road to polihale are sugar cane fields, as most of kauai had back then. we'd only have to ask him and he'd pull out his machete and cut cane for us where ever we were. this is the best and only way to eat sugar cane. period.
getting ready for this trip along with attending the reunion, made me realize how much i loved him and miss him along with the time he spent with us.
this is why it feels like going home.
unrelated to anything... rachael yamagata gots herself a new album coming out. soon. i hope. was listening to her album teaser and it fit very well as i wrote this.
